A question for recallists ,

Many moons ago, in late 1970s, I came across a well off person in 50s. who said that "so called freedom movement contributed nothing to me. I was born in absolutely poor family. I studied hard in a run a down school. I gave bank clerk exam, and got selected. Later I took external courses, studied hard and gave officer exam, and got selected as officer. And I have come on my own".

Was he missing something? Or are we missing something when we praise freedom fighters?

My response , which I developed some 20 years after we had conversation was --- the procedure of recruitment by written exam came because of activists.

Has there been no activism and resulting resistance, the elitemen would have continued with recruitment procedure by interviews where they can recruit their relatives etc. Or they may even make it hereditary.

So he was intelligent, studious and hard working. Which is why he excelled in written exam. But if procedure of recruitment by written exam was not there, he may have never even become a clerk. In fact, his preparation for exams made him smarter. If there was no procedure of recruitment by written exams, he perhaps would NOT even had prepared for exams, and never improved his mathematical abilities etc.

Now activist may not have demanded Recruitment by written exam. But activists only gather resistance against nepotism, And then some elitemen suggests that recruitment should be by written exams. And other elitemen agree with him due to resistance,. i.e. in absence of resistance, the other elitemen would have never accepted recruitment by written exams. So out of 10 small states, each facing resistance from commons, one state may finally accept recruitment by written exam. Then that state will become stronger and defeat all other states !!! And so this procedure will spread.

So freedom fighters created a situation where the British had to give higher share of powers to freedom fighters, and not all of them were like Jawaher Ghazi,. Some due to fear and some due to commitment extended recruitment by written exam to many many departments, and so chances that studious persons will get selected increased
