Even after Maratha defeated Mugals in Delhi, they re-installed a Mugal King back on Delhi's throne. The Maratha themselves did NOT sit on Delhi's Throne nor did they installed any of their Hindu ally.
.
Why?
.
In 1757, Maratha defeated Mugal and Afghans who were controlling Delhi. After defeat, actual control over Delhi went into the hands of Maratha. But Maratha allowed Mugal to continue as ceremonial head. Delhi throne was prestigious across India, and if Maratha had directly sat on that throne, it would have had tremendous symbolic value.
.
And not just symbolic, there was material effect too. In 1761, in Third Battle of Panipat between Maratha and Afghans, the Mugal emperor refused to give timely help and Maratha lost. The distance between Delhi and Panipat is only some 100 km. If timely supplies etc had come, then Maratha would have won.
.
IOW, if Maratha themselves had sat on Delhi throne or installed their close Hindu ally, then that would have helped. But despite the fact that Mugals were not trustworthy, Maratha allowed Mugal King to sit on Delhi throne. WHY?
