What is difference between khadi and cotton mill cloth
.
Mill cotton cloth is made up of cotton plant and so is khadi.
.
Khadi means cotton cloth which is made without use of fuel and without using mahcine which use electricity , coal or disiel or solar energry or even ox power. eg in mill, the charkha moves via electricity while in khadi, charkha moves manually. thats the only difference. if charkha is moved ox power , then also it isnt khadi.
.
Now if mill is in India and is 100% Indian owned, and if all machines in mill are 100% made in India, then cotton mill cloth is also 100% swadeshi .
.
And if videshi say Bangladeshi in India is moving charkha, then that khadi isnt swadeshi.
.
Cotton mill is cloth is heavily taxed. Excise, VAT, service tax, central sales tax, sales tax, local body tax etc all taxes are apply. The establishments such as factory , godown, sales outlets pay municipal property tax at very high rate - 7 times residential in ahmedabad. While kadhi factories, shops etc pay only twice the residential rate. And factories have to follow labor laws , PF, pay higher salary due to unions , suffer strikes, etc. Labor laws etc dont apply on khadi and salaries are lower than mills.
.
And khadi gets govt subsidies !!
.
And despite this mill cotton cloth is cheaper than khaadi cotton cloth !! And mill cotton cloth is stronger and more durable.
.
So first it is myth that cotton mill cloth isnt swadeshi and only khadi is swadeshi. Both can be swadeshi.
.
And khadi gives employment is false claim. If the machines used by cotton cloth is made in india and made by indians, the cotton mill cloth generates same amount of employment per rupee spent compared to khadi , if one removes all taxes and subsidies.
.
I have been wearing cotton mill cloth from one specific mill (which I dont want to advertise) for past 35 years. The short cloth is rs 100 per meter, and width is 3 ft, which makes it Rs 10 per sqft. A similar khadi , less durable , costs Rs 150 per meter i.e. Rs 15 sqft . i.e. 50% more. If taxes are removed, and labor in mill gets same wage as khadi, then cotton mill clot will cost less than half i.e. Rs 50 per meter = Rs 5 per sqft . And if subsidies are removed, the khadi cotton will cost some 4 times, i.e.Rs 200 per meter i.e. Rs 20 per sqft !!! .
.
So lets say 10000 sqft of khadi is produced, Then for same rupee cost and labor, 40000 sqft cotton mill can be produced. Now labor employed in mill be less. But a huge amount of labor is employed in factories which make machines which are used in cotton mills. If all these machines are made in India and made by Indians , then employment in cotton and khaadi for same rupee spent will be same.
.
The real benefit of cotton mill cloth isnt reduction in cost, but improvement in engineering which leads to improvement in weapons !! All that is explain in my today's previous post .
