Why Bhutanese are living illusionary happiness? Because Bhutan has no weapon manufacturing capability, and one day end up becoming another Iraq
Many articles claim that Bhutan is highest in happiness index. But all their happiness is just as illusion. Because Bhutan has near zero weapon manufacturing capability. It heavily depends on India to defend itself from China and eventual onslaught from missionaries and MNC-owners. And India too doesnt have goo weapon manufacturing capaibity to speak of. Unless Bhutanese realize this and improve their weapon manufacturing, one they they will ed up being another Iraq or another Tibet or even worse.
Bhutanese are happy as they dont know how good life is along some dimensions in rest of the world eg infant morlatity rate in Bhutan is 44/1000, compared to 6/1000 in USA, 5/1000 in Canada, 5/1000 in Cuba and 15/1000 in China. Likewise, death at pregnance is also higher compared to Cuba, China, forget west. Food poverty etc is low because of high land per person. The population density is only 18/sqkm (compared to 377/sqgkm of India). Water\sunlight is plenty and so there is plenty of grass and small grain, which creates abundent supply of meat along with usual vegetarian food. And welfare state creates a stable life for most.
But after that, industry is near zero. And a bigger zero when it comes manufacturing weapons. The maths\science education is poor, because the elite in past didnt want population to study !! The existing king seems to have realized that Bhutan was getting behind, and so some education is now coming up. But it is way too little.
So unless Bhutanese realize this, they are doomed. The country is set to be another another Iraq or another Tibet or worse.
And there is not much we can do. We in India have enough mess in hand. All we can do is learn moral of the story -- that all fancy things in absence of weapon manufacturing are useless. Once can form all types of artistic activities, make best movies, do best sports, have all hyper-activive NGOs, or just be happy. But at the end of the day, if that nation is not making weapons, then it is just another Iraq in waiting.
