Nonsense that secret ballot was brought in usa in 1884 to stop voter selling

There was no significant voter buying in 1884 !!
.
In 1884 , voting in usa loksabha was 78%. And it was 78% of registered voters. It was only 72% of adult men above 21 years. To be clear , usa had 14 million men above age of 21 years in year 1884. And only 10 million ie 72% voted.
.
If voter buying was rampant , it would have been almost 100% .
.
So no - voter buyout was non issue. And even if issue, it has simple solution - recall.

So reasons were others.
