The batteries were providing more voltage. 2 * 3.7 v = 7.4 v was more than what is needed by relay. This burns relay. Relay needs 5v DC . Buck convertor reduces 7.4 or more (when fully charged ) DC voltage of batteries to 5v DC and gives a continuous supply of 5 volt to the relay.
