From 1792 to 1884 , almost all districts in usa allowed voters to use 'ballot papers
printed by candidate' !!

Because voting in most cases except some judge or sheriff elections was open.
.
Particularly, all loksabha president vidhansabha governor elections were open till 1884. And allowed ballot papers printed by candidate
.
So voter will take ballot paper given by candidate, and submit and office will put a stamp and some serial number etc.
.
So almost all who wanted to see who voted for who, could see who voted for who !!!
