.
I rememebr reading about Roman histiory in class-9/10. And even though I was in science stream, I had read history books of 11th / 12th and also BA
.
None of the books I had read in India, talked about ELECTIONS or Jury in Roman from 700 BC to almost 100 AD
.
IOW, historians of India , simply suppressed information about democracy in Rome from 700 BC onwards !!
.
Here are some articles worth reading for all

.
The lex Hortensia, also sometimes referred to as the Hortensian law, was a law passed in Ancient Rome in 287 BC which made all resolutions passed by the Plebeian Council, known as plebiscita, binding on all citizens. It was passed by the dictator Quintus Hortensius in a compromise to bring the plebeians back from their secession to the Janiculum.

The early monarchs in Rome were elected !!! The term was lifem but upon death, next monarch will be elected !!!
.
<https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/King_of_Rome>;
.
The king of Rome (Latin: rex Romae) was the chief magistrate of the Roman Kingdom.[1] According to legend, the first king of Rome was Romulus, who founded the city in 753 BC upon the Palatine Hill. Seven legendary kings are said to have ruled Rome until 509 BC, when the last king was overthrown. These kings ruled for an average of 35 years.
.
The kings after Romulus were not known to be dynasts and no reference is made to the hereditary principle until after the fifth king Tarquinius Priscus. Consequently, some have assumed that the Tarquins' attempt to institute a hereditary monarchy over this conjectured earlier elective monarchy resulted in the formation of the republic.

Imo, that was the reason why Rome was so strong. And thats why, when Alexander decided to expand his empire, he decided not to attack eastern regions ( which were under Rome) but descided to attach western regions (Turkey, Iran etc ).
