Why is USA far far ahead in terms of innovations than Western Europe?

USA's population is some 300 millions. And population of Wester Europe i.e ( European countries minus former Communist countries) i.e. UK , Ireland, France, Germany, Spain, Portugal, Italy, Scandinavia etc is also about the same.
.
But in terms of innovations in any field --- softwater, computer chips, medicine discovery, movie making etc etc, USA is far far ahead than all West European countries combined
.
Some 235 years ago, say 1780 AD, USA was at par with West European countries. Neither ahead , nor behind,
.
So what factors have created such HUGE difference?
.
Common language is non issue. Because by 1920 and more so by 1950, English was known to all scientists / engineers across Europe.
.
WW1 and WW2 did make a dent. But real thing is talents and skills, which remain intact even during war. Once war ends, skills and talents can take the nation back where it was before war. i.e. all damages that war made get repaired in few years.
.
So language and wars are lesser issues --- almos non-issues.
.
So pls enumerate factors because of which USA today is far far ahead in terms of innovations that Western Europe combined.
