Iconic movie SHOLAY completes 40 years yesterday (from the day when it was released).
SOME FACTS ABOUT SHOLAY
1. Shatrughan Sihna was the 1st choice for the role of JAI (which went to Amitabh Bachchan later on the recommendation of Salim-Javed).
2. Sholay took more than 2 years to complete.
3. Danny was the 1st choice to play the role of GABBAR (the role went to Amjad Khan as Danny's dates clashed with the other movie he was doing, Dharmatama, again on the recommendation of Salim-Javed).
4. Jagdeep's role was not there in the film but was added later on once the film was complete to give more humour.
5. Both Amitabh Bachchan and Sanjeev Kumar wanted to play the role of GABBAR.
6. Shooting of Sholay started in 1973 when Zanjeer was not released (Amitabh became a superstar overnight after the release of Zanjeer and even married Jaya Bhaduri just prior to the shooting of Sholay; Jaya became pregnant also during the shooting of sholay)
7. India's 1st 70mm movie with stereophonic sound.
8. SHOLAY was declared a FLOP by all critics in 1st week of its release. It gained momentum only in the 3rd week.
9. SHOLAY won just 1 Filmfare Award (best editing) (There was no award in the best villain category at that time; Shashi Kapoor won the best supporting actor award for Deewar - Amjad Khan was also in this category).
10. G.P. Sippy was very upset with Amjad Khan initially during the shoot, as Amjad used to take more than 20 retakes for any shoot. He was also not happy at all with Amjad Khan's voice and he had even decided to dub Amjad Khan's voice but Ramesh Sippy insisted on keeping Amjad Khan's voice only.
11. AMJAD KHAN'S 1st scene that was shot in the movie was when he comes to Sanjeev Kumar's house to take revenge.
12. It took 23 days to shoot a 30 second scene where JAYA BHADURI lights a lamp during the twilight when Amitabh Bachchan was playing music.
13. Dharmendra added dialogues himself impromptu while shooting the water tank (drunk scene). Mausi ji..mausi ji.. was not written in the script.
14. Originally, GABBAR was seen as killed by Sanjeev Kumar in the movie but due to objection from the Censor Board (as it was giving A certificate to Sholay), the scene was changed and OM SHIVPURI came in the last scene to arrest GABBAR SINGH.
